This model surpassed its predecessor, the W114, as the most successful Mercedes, selling 2.7 million units before production ended. It was such a hit that those who placed orders faced up to 12 months for delivery. A black market even emerged you could pay more for immediate delivery receiving a used car! They were over-engineered, well-built, durable, and reliable and taxi companies in Germany chose it for this reason. They could easily reach 500,000 or 1,000,000 km with minor mechanical issues and once it had reached the end of service life, they were often shipped to third world countries where they were highly esteemed for ability to travel on rough roads and further without frequent maintenance.
