The 2021 PORSCHE TURBO (992.1) driven by Jean-Pierre van der Walt returned to Simola Hillclimb last year (2023) to win the ‘Road & Supercar’ class once again for the third consecutive year with a time of 44.991 on a damp track and in ‘limp’ mode! His personal best time for the season was 44.281! It is worth noting that he beat 3rd place Formula 1 driver Mica Salo, who stood in for Michael Schumacher in 1999 with a time of 47.876 in a Mercedes AMG 45S. With a 640hp twin-turbocharged 3.7-litre flat-six engine in the back and a 0-100sec take-off of 2.2sec, it's not surprising that you would choose this all-wheeler to tear up the corners in a hill-climb competition. The 2007 GOULD GR55 driven by Andre Bezuidenhout won the 'Single-Seater' category at Knysna’s Simola Hillclimb this year doing 37.580sec over the line. Last year it was 34.161sec which is the record to date for this event! Purposely built for hill-climb racing and imported from the UK, it has a 3.8-litre V8 Nicholson McLaren loaded into the back which allows the car to tear up the hill at an average speed of over 200km/h! The 2016 NISSAN R35 GT-R 1600hp lookalike driven by Franco Scribante won the modified saloon category at Knysna’s Simola Hillclimb this year, crossing the line in 39.877 secs with rainy conditions! At first glance, this devil looks like it just can’t wait to take off but the huge ‘Diasinos’ Aerodynamic Wing Pack is there to keep it on the ground. Highly modified with 4WD transmission, it sports a chromoly space frame with a VR38 motor all wrapped in a carbon fibre body getting you a 0-100km/h time of just 2,2secs! There is word that a new chassis design is coming soon so flying might just end up being the order of the day.(drawn 29May'23)
