The 1983 MASERATI MERAK SS, designed by Giorgetto Guigiaro, was a lightweight, more powerful model released in 1976, 3yrs after the basic model debuted. It featured a 50kg(110 lb) weight reduction and a 30 PS power increase to 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) due to the adoption of three larger 44 DCNF 44 carburettors and a higher 9:1 compression ratio to its longitudinally mounted V6 engine. The SS is specifically recognizable by its black grille between the pop-up headlights but also shares its nose with the previous, more expensive ‘Bora’. Guigiaro introduced to flying buttresses to visually extend the tail after removing the fastback by abruptly ending the cabin with a vertical rear window and a flat horizontal engine cover. Only 1000 units of the SS had been made by 1983, when it was discontinued.
